With the start of the new semester, we at LACSI would like to extend our heartiest well wishes to you all as you embark on a new academic year. During this time, we will be recognizing two important milestones for the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute. First, the Ethnobotanical Garden celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2025. We are excited to be partnering with the Institute of Native American Studies on this longstanding fixture of the campus community. Next, 2026 will mark the 20th year of LACSI’s status as an Institute (formerly the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies). We are excited to celebrate these important developments in our organization’s history and invite the LACSI community to join us.
In Fall 2025, we are excited to offer and support a range of activities. Our calendar of events for Hispanic Heritage Month (forthcoming) includes the annual Open House (Sept. 12th), the presentation of Dr. Sharina Maillo-Pozo’s recently published book (Oct. 10th), and a screening of the documentary film Displaced in the New South (Sept. 18th), organized by the UGA Special Collections Library. This visit includes a visit by the Atlanta-based filmmaker and photographer, David Zeiger, along with a related exhibit entitled Displaced in the New South: A Photography Project by David Zeiger, which is on display at the Special Collections Library now through December 2025. We will also be co-sponsoring the 2025 Georgia Latino Education Summit, organized by the Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education on October 25.
We are excited to welcome another year full of exciting programming that will engage our students and faculty more closely with Latin America and the Caribbean. If you’re in the neighborhood (290 S. Hull Street), please ignore the construction and drop in for a visit at the Casa Amarilla/Casa Amarela/Q’ellu Wasicha/Yellow House (290 S. Hull Street). We’d love to welcome you!

Portuguese Flagship Program renewed by the IIE
|
|

We are thrilled to share the news that the Portuguese Flagship Program (PFP) at UGA has been renewed by the Institute of International Education.
UGA has hosted the PFP since 2011 after a series of successful consecutive applications. Since its inception, the program has offered an unprecedented opportunity for motivated students to internationalize their academic experience. PFP students strive to achieve superior proficiency in Portuguese and gain insight into how this skill and body of knowledge will create future opportunities during four years of study.
