Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. She is a product of the Puerto Rican communities on the island and in the South Bronx. As a child, she was sent to live with her grandparents where she was introduced to the culture of rural Puerto Rico, including the storytelling that came naturally to the women, especially the older women, in her family. Much of her work is based on her experiences during this time.
Ms. Llanos-Figueroa’s second novel, A Woman of Endurance, (Spanish edition: Indómita), was published by Amistad, an imprint of HarperCollins in Spring 2022. The paperback edition of A Woman of Endurance was published in Spring 2023. The Brazilian Portuguese edition will be published in 2024 (Biographical sketch taken from the author's website).
This event is co-sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, the Department of Romance Languages, and LACSI.

UGA Honors students tour the garden as part of their lunch box series
The last couple of weeks have brought many visitors to the garden. From students to butterflies, everyone seems to be enjoying the change in the weather.
In one of the accompanying photos, a monarch butterfly sips nectar from a Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia) as it embarks on its remarkable fall migration south to Mexico. After wintering, we can hope to spot a new generation passing through in the spring.

Final morning glories of the year
It is also time to enjoy the last morning glory blooms (Ipomea purpurea). Morning glories have a rich history intertwined with shamanistic rituals, especially in Mesoamerican cultures. Symbolically, morning glories represent beauty, love, and the ephemeral nature of existence. These gorgeous days are short and fleeting, don't let them pass without stepping outdoors to marvel at this precious gift.
